MOVE! Detail 1

Heading 1

My practice is subconsciously interactive. I make artwork that takes an abstract form and disrupts an audience’s experience of a public realm by playing to subconscious social queues about the uses of space.

My work manipulates the power dynamic typically seen between a work and an audience, resulting in an interdependence to create a harmony of movement between the two, through prompting atypical physical interactions. My work is used as a guide around a space, often using small pieces as a part of a larger installation, such as in MOVE!, where multiple clay pieces are positioned to create a challenging physical experience. It prompts the audience to experience a space in a different physical way, changing the normality of how art is experienced through immersive sculptural installations.

I aim to explore the relationship between public spaces and human behaviours, using my work to promote unlikely bodily choreography around a space. My work relates to the wider idea of the built environment and how it manipulates the ways we use our bodies; I want to create work that challenges this and leads to atypical behaviours. In the studio I am currently exploring how nature dictates how humans can use outdoor spaces, exploring concepts such as desire paths and rock densities. I am informed by my own surroundings and experiences of spaces, most recently by natural locations in Dorset. Using a muted colour palette, my work is often minimalist but immersive. I work with a variety of matter dictated by what my work is trying to achieve, using plaster of late to create sculptural pieces. As a result, I create a unique and private experience for individual viewers, as each subconscious reaction varies, whilst being part of a public space amongst a larger audience.
